Absolutely, it’s my favorite way!  I realized a few days ago that most sausages don’t have directions on the packaging to cook in the oven.   Oven baked sausage is one of my family’s favorite meals, so I wanted to share how easy they are to make.   All you need is a baking sheet, parchment paper and sausage!

How long to cook sausage in oven?

I recommend cooking sausages for 30 minutes in the oven. This allows the sausage to fully safely cook, and brown the outside slightly creating a nice crispy sausage.

Cook sausages at 400 degrees, for 30 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches a internal temperature of 165 F using a meat thermometer.

How to Cook Frozen Sausage

If your sausage is frozen you can still cook them as instructed on the page, but add a additional 15-20 minutes to cook them.  

What can I serve with sausage?

Sausages are on our weekly dinner menu because they’re so easy to make.  Adding vegetables onto the baking sheet, alongside the sausage is a great family dinner.

Having tried all of these techniques I can say that baking sausage (homemade or store bought), is the simplest, easiest, least mess and for me the most confident way to know that they have been completely cooked.

When cooking sausage there is a double concern. The first concern is that all ground meat should be cooked to 160 degrees and the second issue is that pork in the United States can harbor the parasite Tricinosis.

Baking sausage is simple.

It is that simple and does not require you to continually turn the sausages as they cook in a frying pan or on the grill. The only downside to baking sausage is that you will not have the characteristic grill marks that are created when pan frying or grilling. Personally, I am willing to forgo the grill marks when the alternative is simpler, easier and not as messy.

WHY COOK SAUSAGE IN THE OVEN?

Cooking Italian sausage in the oven frees up your stovetop for preparing other parts of your meal. The oven also gives you more temperature control, especially if you use both an oven thermometer and a meat thermometer. If you want to bake something else in the oven at the same time, you can adjust the temperature you use for cooking the sausage. For convenience, flavor and ease, few other cooking methods for sausage match oven preparation.

1. Location, Location, Location

While most people enjoy grilled sausage, the weather won’t always cooperate with your cookout plans. In many parts of the country, outdoor grilling is only comfortably possible for a few months out of the year. HOW TO COOK SAUSAGE IN THE OVEN

You can cook sausage in a variety of ways—from pan-frying to grilling and everything in between. While you have multiple preparation options for fresh sausage, if you’ve never oven baked sausage before, it’s time you became acquainted with this simple cooking method that lets you focus on preparing the sides to accompany your sausage.

TEMPERATURE TO USE

Whether cooking links or patties in your oven, use any temperature between 350 degrees and 425 degrees Fahrenheit. Ideally, aim for baking the meat at 400 degrees Fahrenheit, especially if you don’t have other foods in the oven at the same time.

If you use a convection oven, lower the temperature by 25 degrees Fahrenheit. Convection ovens have a fan inside to circulate the warm air, so food inside cooks faster and more evenly. Always place the pan on the center rack in the middle of the oven to take advantage of the air flow. When using a convection oven and following the same temperature guidelines for a conventional oven, check the sausage at three-fourths the recommended cooking time. Your meat will finish heating through faster and require less time if you bake it at the same temperature as you would in a conventional oven.

COOKING TIME IN THE OVEN

When baking in the oven, always preheat it completely. An oven thermometer can help you determine when your oven has reached the appropriate temperature. If your oven temperature does not match the setting on the thermostat, consider getting your appliance recalibrated. If you do want to cook different foods simultaneously, you can find easy sausage recipes that allow you to bake the sausage at the same time. But cooking will take longer if you bake at temperatures lower than 400 degrees Fahrenheit. For ovens set at 350 degrees Fahrenheit, cook your sausage links for a minimum of 25 minutes, turning each piece at 10-minute intervals, and keep in mind that larger links can take at least an hour to cook through completely.

SAFELY COOKING SAUSAGE

Food safety starts with properly handling the raw meat and it ends with correctly serving the cooked product. When you begin, wash your hands with hot, soapy water for at least 30 seconds. Don’t forget to scrub under any rings you wear. If possible, remove rings, watches or bracelets to keep your jewelry away from raw meat. Finally, it’s ready to eat, but don’t use the same plate you used for the raw sausage to serve the cooked ones. Use a new, clean plate for serving. Also cut the meat with a clean knife, not the one you cut the raw sausages with.

This method keeps sausages intact throughout the baking process, but if you want to cook links, you can get a grilled texture by using a broiler pan.

If you have a broiler pan with a grated top and a pan on bottom, you can also use that to cook the meat. The grates on top will allow the juices to drip through to the pan beneath. Make your own broiler pan with a metal cookie cooling rack placed on top of a baking sheet. Verify the rack is made entirely of metal and oven safe. Alternatively, you can put links directly on the oven rack with a sheet pan on the rack below to catch drippings.

Preheat the oven at a temperature of 400F/200C (180C fan oven).

Remove the sausages from the packaging.

Arrange the sausages on a baking tray in a single layer leaving space between them.

You can line the baking tray with parchment paper for easier clean-up.

Place the baking tray in the oven and bake at a temperature of 200C/400F (180C fan) for 30-35 minutes flipping the sides halfway through cooking.

Bring out the baking tray, rest the sausages for 5 minutes then serve.

How To Cook Frozen Sausages 

Frozen sausages can be cooked in the oven but it requires a longer time to cook frozen sausage than cooking from chilled. 

To bake frozen sausages, take them out from the packet or packaging.

If they are stuck together, separate them into individual pieces. You can do this by running them under the tap.

Arrange the sausages on a baking tray and place the baking tray in the oven.

Bake at a temperature of 190C/375F for 40 minutes or until well cooked flipping the sides halfway through cooking.

Bring out the baking tray, rest the sausages for 5 minutes then serve.

Those crazy, hectic family nights are made for this ridiculously easy Baked Italian Sausage dinner! It's worth having at least one package of frozen sausages stored away in the freezer for a quick dinner option that doesn't even require thawing before baking.

The choices for vegetables to spread on the baking sheet and roast simultaneously are varied. You can add potatoes or sweet potatoes, root vegetables such as carrots, parsnips, and beets. Or bake your sausages up with onions and peppers.

If cooked up as seen here you can toss the sliced baked Italian sausage with buttered pasta if desired, or place on a sandwich roll with some melted mozzarella! Either way, some marinara sauce is a fantastic addition. Or, just use your marinara for dipping!

How Long To Bake Sausages in the Oven?

Your sausages are cooked when the casings have a nice golden color, the inside ground meat is no longer pink, and the juices from the meat run off clear. You should be able to see these pan juices on your baking sheet, and they should be free of any pink discoloration.

Sausages need to be cooked until they have an internal temperature of at least 160 degrees F (for pork sausages in the US) and 165 degrees F (for poultry sausages in the US).

My family and I think that our oven-baked Italian sausages are perfect as they are, directly out of the oven. If you like the skin extra crispy, there are a couple of options that help to add that 'extra'!

For the first option, you can heat the baking tray in the oven during the preheating. Place a sheet of parchment paper on the baking tray, then follow the directions for baking your sausages.

The second option is to turn on the broiler to low. Finish baking the Italian sausages with the broiler on for the last 5 minutes or so.

Can I Bake Sausages That Are Frozen?

Yes, definitely! Of course, check the package instructions for any directions to the contrary. Overall, however, you should be able to cook sausage from frozen without defrosting or thawing. This will typically work with any brand or variety of sausage.

When starting with frozen sausages, add 10-15 minutes of cooking time. Also, rinse in warm water to separate the sausages that may be frozen together.

Should I Pierce The Casings?

This is a debate about whether or not the casings will 'pop' or burst, spraying the sausage juices all over your oven.

I do not prefer to pierce the casings. This allows the juices out of the casing, which means it loses flavor. Also, the juices inside the casing help to cook the ground sausage meat thoroughly. However, it is just a personal preference and you can do whatever works best for you!

I have been making this one pan oven roasted sausage and vegetables for years! The best thing about this recipe is that you can use whatever vegetables and whatever sausages you have on hand. I even play around with spices. My family loves Italian seasoning but they also likes this meal when I used Cajun seasoning as well as Mexican taco seasoning. Enjoy the leftovers for lunch the next day and you can even pack them for work lunches or school lunches.

Sausage Bake – One Pan Meal!

I have a rule about sausages. Sausages for dinner must always be accompanied with gravy – here’s how I make it on the stove: Sausages and Gravy.

So I’ve made a sausage, veggie and gravy dinner super easy by making it all in one pan.

Yes, you heard me right. This Sausage Bake is all made in ONE PAN. YES those golden brown sausages and roasted vegetables are sitting on a pool of gravy that was cooked right in the oven along with them!!

Cooking sausages in the oven

Cooking sausages in the oven is easy: just bake sausages at 180C/350F for 40 to 50 minutes until browned, turning halfway. It’s a terrific hands off, less mess alternative to pan frying.

The sausages will actually be cooked through at 30 minutes or so, but they won’t be nicely browned. Browning = flavour, and sausages are meant to be browned! Because sausages are enclosed in casing, they don’t dry out with a slightly longer cook time.

So keep them in the oven until they are nicely browned, as shown in the photos in this post!

How to cook Sausages in the oven with vegetables and gravy

Toss vegetables and potatoes in oil, salt, pepper and a touch of dried herbs of choice (I use thyme and oregano). Place in the pan, then top with sausages.

Whisk up the gravy – it’s made using the same ingredients required in a standard gravy that’s made on the stove. Stock, flour, butter, seasoning.

Except rather than cooking it on the stove, we pour it right into the pan so it bubbles away at the same time the sausages and vegetables are cooking.

By the time the sausages and vegetables are done, the gravy has thickened and is beautifully browned, just like when it’s made on the stove like in this Sausages and Gravy recipe!

Quick Dinner Idea – in one pan!

This is a super tasty and quick dinner to make, but I’m not applauding myself for creating a ground breaking recipe of any kind. Because when you think about it, this Sausage Bake is pretty much made like a stew. The sauce – gravy in this case – is thickened with flour, just like when making a stew.

And the vegetables and meat are cooked together in the sauce – except in this case, I deliberately put the sausages on top so they get nice and brown.
